The Academy Awards, affectionately known as the Oscars, are the oldest, best known, most influential, most prestigious, and famous of film awards. The awards (and gold-plated statuettes) have been presented annually (the first awards ceremony was held in May of 1929) by a non-profit professional organization – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), based in Beverly Hills, California, and founded in 1927. Pricewaterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) has managed the Academy Awards balloting process since 1935 – all but the first six years of the Oscars. Ever since 1941, when their now-famous confidential envelope system was introduced, marking the first year of complete secrecy, “the Envelope Please” has become a familiar phrase that evokes the thought of the Academy Awards ceremony.

Except for the early years of the institution, the awards honored films made during the previous 12-month calendar year. [At first, to be eligible for an award, a film had to open in Los Angeles during the twelve months ending on July 31 of the preceding year. To allow each ceremony to cover films for a single calendar year - matching the eligibility period, the 1932/33 awards were based on a 17-month qualifying period. Ever since then, beginning with the 1934 awards ceremony, all awards have been based on openings in the previous calendar year. Films also had to be over 40 minutes long to qualify as feature-length.] Until 1954, the Oscars were presented mostly on a Thursday evening. From 1955 to 1958, they were presented on a Wednesday. From 1959 until 1998 the Oscars were, with a few exceptions, presented on a Monday night. Only since 1999 has the Awards ceremony taken place on a Sunday (traditionally in March). In 2004, the ceremony was moved even earlier to improve ratings and to be more relevant to the awards ’season’.

Let the post-game party coverage begin!

“The Hurt Locker” was Oscar’s big winner Sunday night, taking its best picture honors in a wow-did-they-just-give-an-award flash at the close of the show. So, why the rush?

The logical explanation for the broadcast’s abrupt end might be that presenter Tom Hanks was under pressure to wrap it up quickly. The Ministry, however, prefers to imagine they sped things up so that everyone could head straight for the parties that followed.

The stars had places to go and people to schmooze: James Cameron and Suzy Amis were about to spend a couple of hours on their feet holding court with the “Avatar” gang and other admirers at the Governors Ball; Jennifer Lopez had to manage a clothing quick-change into party black for the Vanity Fair soiree. Taylor Lautner and Zac Efron, Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock were among those whose presence would be demanded in at least two places at once. And Woody Harrelson was about to arrange a late-night foodie call with a rather large bowl of Wolfgang Puck pasta.

Sandra Bullock named worst actress of year at Razzies

Oscar favourite Sandra Bullock was last night named the worst actress of the year for her ‘performance’ in All About Steve at the annual Golden Raspberry awards (Razzies).

The 45-year-old is the odds-on favourite for Academy award glory at the Kodak Theatre tonight after being nominated for The Blind Side, a role for which she has already won a Golden Globe.
But last night she turned up in person to collect the Razzie for worst actress. No one has ever won a Razzie and Oscar in the same year.
“Something tells me you all didn’t watch the film because I wouldn’t be here if you really, really watched it and understood what I was trying to say,” she said after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.
“Everyone gets a copy and this is the deal I’m going to make.
“I will show up next year if you promise to watch the movie and really consider if it was truly the worst performance. If you’re willing to watch, I’ll come back next year and give back the Razzie.
“Thank you for ruining my career with a very bad decision.”

A Night at the Improv

Ben Stiller’s impression of Joaquin Phoenix scored big laughs with the audience. But according to Page Six, rehearsals for the skit were anything but funny. Stiller reportedly had a “meltdown” because he didn’t think the original script was up to par. He then decided he could “do better” but refused to tell anyone what he was planning until he arrived at the Kodak Theatre. The hair must’ve been a dead giveaway.

Madonna’s post-Oscars party came complete with a bouncer — co-host Demi Moore, who spent the night kicking people out who weren’t on the guest list. The crowd inside was thin because the ladies were super-selective about who made the cut, according to Showbiz Spy. We’re assuming Guy Richie and Sean Penn’s invites were lost in the mail.

Reunited

Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson are back together, claims Zack Taylor. The actress was overheard telling a friend at the Oscars that she was meeting up with her shock rocker ex at an after-party. Say it ain’t so, Evan.

Early Exits

Oscar presenters like Natalie Portman and Daniel Craig bailed on the show early to go to the Vanity Fair viewing party, dishes The Envelope. There, they joined up with the likes of Uma Thurman, Joan Collins, Rachel Weisz and director Darren Aronofsky for dinner and drinks. Maybe it’s time for the Academy to start serving food and cocktails during the telecast, a la the Golden Globes.

Nicole KidmanWas Nicole Kidman trying to hide a baby bump at the Vanity Fair party? The Australian actress was seen outside suspiciously holding her stomach in a fitted dress, spies Perez Hilton. Considering how svelte Kidman remained throughout her pregnancy with Sunday Rose, she could be in her second trimester with that belly.

Best is the Best

The cream of the Hollywood crop was at the Vanity Fair party. Everyone from Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep to Robert De Niro and Josh Brolin turned up for the star-studded affair, reveals Hollywood Today. Along with fancy fare, the guests noshed on bagels, egg and bacon sandwiches and In-N-Out burgers. Even A-listers have cravings.

Cruise

Exes Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz had an awkward run-in at a pre-Oscars CAA party, scoops Page Six. When Penelope tapped Tom on the shoulder to say hello, the actor was “visibly flustered” and quickly turned away after the two shared a “weird” hug. The encounter gets even weirder: Katie Holmes wasn’t there.

Chace Crawford-Party Boy|?

Chace Crawford was a hot commodity on the party scene. He was invited to the DreamWorks pre-Oscars soiree so that studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg’s daughter could ogle him, spies the NY Daily News. Meanwhile, at Elton John’s shindig, Carrie Underwood was hoping to run into her ex, but the ‘Gossip Girl’ star ducked in and out without making eye contact. What a pro.

Prince’s post-Oscar bash was open to the public at the last minute — for $100 a head at the door, says Perez Hilton. The Purple One took the stage for a late-night performance in front of a crowd that included nominee Taraji P. Henson. Guess the economy’s bad everywhere.

Making a Splash-Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus’ glittery mult-tiered gown was inspired by ‘The Little Mermaid.’ The teen star wore the Zuhair Murad designed dress because she was afraid of looking too old on the red carpet, claims The Envelope. Or maybe she was really auditioning to be the next Disney princess.

Eva Longoria-Parker

Eva Longoria-Parker took Victoria Beckham as her date to Elton John’s Oscars event, where the NY Daily News says Victoria wouldn’t stop talking during the late Heath Ledger’s Best Supporting Actor win. The former Spice Girl’s poor party etiquette was also on display when she rolled her eyes and walked away from “low class” Kathy Hilton at a pre-Oscars bash. Well, she is Posh, after all.

Together Again


‘Brothers and Sisters’ stars Emily Van Camp and Dave Annable left the DreamWorks party together, suggesting they’re a couple again. The pair mingled with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Megan Fox and Topher Grace before making their exit, dishes the NY Daily News. Even if they break up again, you know this one will end better than castmate Balthazar Getty’s affair with Sienna Miller.

Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper got hot and heavy on the red carpet, according to Lainey Gossip. The duo, who met on the set of ‘Mamma Mia,’ declined joint interviews because she was “tired.” Perhaps they didn’t want to answer any questions about why Dominic dumped his high school sweetheart while filming the flick.

Rumored couple Rachel McAdams and Josh Lucas skipped out on a NYC Oscars party to go to Toronto to meet her family. The couple is “getting serious,” reports Page Six, despite the fact that Rachel was still hanging out with ex Ryan Gosling just a few months ago. Maybe it was just a farewell fling?

Oscar organisers ’sorry’ for Fawcett omission from memorial

The late Farrah Fawcett was not included in the In Memoriam segment of the recent Academy awards as she was more renowned for television work, organisers have claimed.
The family of the Charlie’s Angels star said they were “deeply saddened” and “bereft” that the actress was not featured in the ceremony’s memorial section, which saw James Taylor perform the Beatles’ In My Life while tributes were paid to the likes of Patrick Swayze, Roy Disney and Brittany Murphy, who all passed away in the last year.
Fawcett died of cancer in June last year but was not included in the segment though singer Michael Jackson – who also died in June 2009 – was featured.
“In every category, you’re going to miss some wonderful people,” said the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ executive director Bruce Davis in response to the complaints of Fawcett’s family.
“There’s nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all,” he added.
“They tend to be surprised and hurt, and we understand that and we’re sorry for it.”
Jackson had been included in the montage having featured in a recent theatrical film, Davis argued, while “an unusual number of extremely distinguished screenwriters” died in the last year, meaning the memorial segment had to feature as many people as possible.

Red carpet: Kristen Stewart

Twilight star Kristen Stewart successfully shed her teenage image for this Oscars. Dressed in a strapless midnight blue gown by Monique Lhuillier , the young starlet blended with the matured crowd.
Stewart looked gorgeous in the gown which accentuated her figure at the top and middle. She kept the look minimal with her hair tied up and a diamond bracelet from H Stern.

She got a thumps up from MTV which called her Oscar look as “‘The Runaway’ star’s Best Red Carpet Look Yet”. The stunning actress took the stage with her Twilight co-star Taylor Launter to make a presentation. She features on MTV’s Oscar Best Dress list which includes Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, Merly Streep, Carey Mulligan and Maggie Gyllenhal.
The 19 year old actress carried herself pretty well contrary to what she feared. Last month she told reporters that she was nervous about the Oscar appearance, “I’m glad I get to do it with [Taylor] too because I’d be so nervous” Stewart said. She also feared that she would trip on stage, “I’ve been looking at shoes, I’m trying to pick shoes that I know I won’t fall down”. But things turned out fine.
